INMED Cross Cultural Competency Symposium: Friday, Oct 2

People seeking healthcare in North America are increasingly global in their make up. Some 50 million are culturally diverse and operate with understandings of health and medicine that are unfamiliar to most healthcare professionals. Nevertheless, we must effectively understand and communicate with these individuals and families to be successful in assisting them. For this very reason, INMED is offering the Cross-Crossing CulturesCultural Competency in Healthcare Symposium on October 2, 2009.

Until then... here is a little bit about our current MPHSO officers:

Rachel Frische, Co-President (rfrische@kumc.edu)

Rachel has a bachelor’s of arts in biology and liberal arts with a minor in chemistry from the University of Missouri-Kansas City where she was enrolled in the 6-year medical program. She is taking a hiatus from her medical doctorate to attain her MPH, which she began last June and plans to complete by December. After finishing her MD and MPH, Rachel aspires to utilize her public health and medical knowledge to become a highly effective community educator and physician at the primary care level of pediatrics and infectious disease.

Nikki Keene, Co-President (nckeene@ku.edu)

Nikki graduated from Wichita State University in 2007 with a bachelors of science in Health Services Management and Community Development. She entered into the joint MPH/PhD program at KU after undergraduate graduation. She has been working with the Work Group for Community Health and Development for two years supporting a variety of projects in Kansas and the Midwest. Projects include youth development, substance abuse prevention among adolescents, technical assistance/capacity development interventions and obesity prevention work in Nebraska. Nikki hopes to eventually work in community development to build healthy environments to reduce chronic diseases, specifically obesity.

Takela Fife, Vice-President (tfife@kumc.edu)

Crystal Boateng, Treasurer (cboateng@kumc.edu)
Crystal graduated from George Mason University in 2002 with a bachelors of science in Health Scien
ce. During her undergraduate final project she was “infected” with the Public Health bug by studying community health and working with the DC DOH. After graduation, she spent time working in clinics and with a health care reimbursement company. She knew she needed to get back in school and continue her education, so she decided to pursue her passion of public health. She is specifically passionate about community health and preventive interventions that utilize education and behavioral approaches.

Teresa Dailey, Secretary/Webmaster (tdailey@kumc.edu)
Teresa graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 2005 with a degree in economics and peace studies. She spent a year in Baltimore supporting international relief and development programs with Catholic Relief Services, and two years buying food for international food aid with the US Department of Agriculture here in Kansas City. She is doing the MPH program part time and is interested in eventually working to improve international public health programs.

Community Service Ideas

Hello KU MPH Students!

It's been a long time since this blog has been updated, so I thought I'd start with a post containing ideas for community service! It's a great way to be active in your community, as well as gain valuable experience in public health. Here are just a few. Feel free to post additional ideas, these are a couple places to start!

1. Jaydoc Free Clinic
Currently, the clinic is in need of Spanish translators. They may have more opportunities available in the fall, so be sure to check out their website:
http://volunteer.jaydocfreeclinic.org/
2. Medical Reserve Corps of Greater Kansas City
One of the primary goals for the Medical Reserve Corps is training volunteers so that we will be ready to respond if the need arises:
http://kcmedicalreservecorps.org/training.asp
3. KC Free Health Clinic
Volunteers are used in a variety of capacities throughout the clinic, from special projects to fundraising, development projects, front office/medical records, HIV Counseling and Testing, behaviorial health program, HIV Prevention programs, Dental services, and General Medicine services. Many of these programs would not be able to offer the volume and quality of services that they do without the assistance of volunteers:

4. Heart to Heart International
Hello everyone,We are proud to announce our 2009 health focus event, Celebrating Healthy Families! The mission of these events is to provide screening, follow‐up care, and health resources to Latino community members who are uninsured or underinsured.Attached (see below to link to attachments) you will find a summary of our 2008 event and an invitation/save the date for 2009.For those of you interested in either volunteering or providing screening(s), attached you will find the registration forms. Please let us know if you have questions. Hope to see you on October 3!Best regards,Celebrating Healthy Families planning committeeFile(s) will be available for download until 26 July 2009:Attachment: report_FINAL.pdf, 1,213.15 KB Attachment: Save the Date letter_2009.pdf, 221.31 KB Attachment: 2009 Screener_form.pdf, 119.49 KB Attachment: 2009 Volunteer Form_en.pdf, 137.53 KB
You can also visit Heart to Heart's website: http://hearttoheart.org/

Thanks for taking the time to look through these opportunities! We hope you are able to find something that uses your talents and skills to make our community a better place! Again, feel free to post any opportunities that you hear about that other MPH students might be interested in.

Thanks!

Teresa (thansen2@kumc.edu), on behalf of the MPHSO officers
