National Public Health Week! Speakers and free lunch!

Join the Master of Public Health Student Organization along with SEAD, PHR, SWAG, KUMC Health Policy Org and MHSA during National Public Health Week April 4th - 8th as we celebrate the diverse elements of public health.

Monday:               What is Public Health?  Why should I get an MPH?

Each day we will bring you a guest speaker from noon to 1.
Lunch will be provided on a first come, first serve basis except Wednesday.

National Public Health Week Planning Meeting!!!

March MPHSO Meeting!

Join us Thursday, March 10th at 6pm at Jaywalkers!

We are planning National Public Health Week!

April 4th – 8th

Monday:  What is Public Health?  Why should I get an MPH?  (Kelly Gorman)
Tuesday:  Public Health Policy  (Elizabeth Durkin)
Wednesday:  Mental Health  (Joseph Pacheco & Amber Ashley)
Thursday:  Environmental Health (Karissa Deculus)
Friday:  Diversity w/ LGBT focus (Stephanie Grassie)

We need help with:
  •  Speaker Introductions
  •  Food/Lunch Set Up & Clean Up
  • Advertising & Promoting the Events
  • Promoting awareness of the new texting law(s)
If you are an individual or student organization interested in any of the topics and/or the items we need help with, please ATTEND!  If you cannot make it please contact the officer in charge of the topic.  (listed in parentheses).

Also, we will be voting in 2011-2012 officers in May.  If you are interested in a position please attend the March and April meetings to learn more.

April is exciting for Public Health!!!


Thanks so much for those of you who came out to support us at our meeting on Friday! We did an incredible job of assembling the Haiti Care Kits and they are now at Heart to Heart International for shipment to Haiti! We ended up with 9 boxes full of supplies, and about 75-80 kits!

In case you missed the meeting, here highlights of the discussion:

April 1st: Public Health Day at the Capital (8:30am-3:30pm)
  • Go to Topeka to visit with your legislatures and learn more about the legal process.
  • Email thonderick@kumc.edu for more information

April 5-9th: National Public Health Week!!!
  • Keep an eye out for an email invitation to help participate in community outreach presenations to area high schools and community colleges.
  • Email kumphso@gmail.com if you want to present to your class about public health and the Kansas Public Health Association. We will provide you with a brief 3 minute script and copies of the KPHA application for students.
April 10th: MPHSO Health Walk & KUMC Annual Street Fair
  • Join MPHSO and the Jahawk health admin student org in a Health Walk from 9:30am-12pm around the KUMC campus. Games, healthy snacks, and free t-shirts provided!
  • End the Health walk by walking to the KUMC Annual Street Fair which happens from 12pm-4pm that same afternoon!
  • Games, prizes, clowns, and lots of fun will be happening at the fair.
  • The entire KUMC and Rosedale Community is invited
  • MPHSO will be hosting a Nutrition booth
  • Email kumphso@gmail.com if you are interested in volunteering at the health walk or the MPHSO booth.
April 10th: Multiple Sclerosis Walk (8:30am- finish walk)
  • Join other MPH students in the fight against MS
  • Help Ashli Owen (MPH student) fight her battle with this disease by joining her team

April 31st/ May 1st: Public Health Pow Wow
  • Volunteer to help out with the Annual Pow Wow held for Native American Public Health at the Johnson County Community College
  • Help set up, provide education/clinic assistance, and clean up
